Life in Darafshan village and a simple opportunity Rahmatullah lives in
Darafshan village in Khas Uruzgan district of Uruzgan province, where daily life is shaped by hard work, modest resources, and the constant effort to meet household needs. Like many families in the area, his days revolve around routine responsibilities and finding ways to improve the future of his family.
In such conditions, even a small opportunity can create meaningful change. For Rahmatullah, that opportunity came in the form of a small fish pond. What first seemed like a simple activity gradually became an important part of his daily life, bringing both enjoyment and new possibilities.

“If you have the financial means, this can be the best investment you make—one that is full of peace, healthy engagement, and economic empowerment.”
A new beginning through PALPA
Through the PALPA project, which supports sustainable livelihoods, better use of natural resources, and economic opportunities for vulnerable communities, Rahmatullah received support to start fish farming.
At first, the pond was only a new experience for him. He did not expect it to become something so valuable for his family. Over time, however, it became more than a source of fish, it became a shared place of interest and enjoyment for the household. Rahmatullah notes that caring for the pond has turned into a positive daily routine. It is now a recreational gathering spot where brothers, cousins, and other family members spend time together. What started as a small support has helped create a warmer and more connected family environment.

Responsibility, learning, and routine
As the months passed, fish farming became part of Rahmatullah’s everyday routine. He feeds the fish regularly, changes the water when needed, and carefully checks their condition to keep them healthy. Protecting them from harm and maintaining clean water are now regular responsibilities that he manages with care. This experience has also taught him valuable lessons. Through managing the pond, he has learned more about water conservation and better resource use. Instead of wasting water, he now uses extra pond water for other household and agricultural needs.
Growing benefits and future potential
The support has already brought encouraging results. Rahmatullah says he has produced around 500 young fish. For him, this is more than just a number—it is a sign that a small activity can gradually become a meaningful source of income and stability for the future.
He also shares his experience with others in the village and encourages them to build fish ponds if they are able. In his view, fish farming offers both economic value and a peaceful recreational space for families. He actively encourages his neighbors to consider this path, believing it to be a highly rewarding investment for both mental well-being and financial stability.

“Caring for the fish has become a wonderful hobby. This pond is now a recreational and gathering spot for me, my brothers, my cousins, and other family members.”
A gradual change with lasting value
For Rahmatullah, the change did not happen all at once. It came step by step through daily care, learning, and patience. What began as a small pond has become a source of enjoyment, practical skills, and hope for the future.
Today, the fish pond is no longer just a project activity. It is part of his family’s daily life and a reminder that even small opportunities, when managed with commitment and care, can lead to lasting positive change.
